Frequently Asked Questions

General:

  1. I am moving into Grandview's attendance area, how do I enroll my student?

First, please visit the district admissions site HERE for information on registering your child. Once registration is complete, they will direct you to call us. Please call our main counseling line at 720-886-6610 to schedule a day for your student to come in to finish the registration process. Aside from high volume times, we have new student appointments every Tuesday and Friday throughout the school year.

Before coming in, it is important that you have your parent forms completed (district admissions will explain how to do these) and it is extremely helpful if you have a copy or screenshot of your student’s current classes/grades and their grades from any prior high school years. This helps our counselors create an accurate schedule for your student.

  2. I (or my student am having trouble logging into/accessing my.cherrycreekschools.org or other applications.

Please contact our Grandview Technology Department by e-mailing GVH Tech with your issue.

  3. How can I contact my student's couselor?

There are a few ways you can contact us. E-mail us, call us, make an appointment using our Calendly link or call the main counseling line (720-886-6610) to make an appointment. Our contact information can be found on the main counseling webpage.

Academics:

  1. How can I check on my student's academic progress?

You can check your student’s grades (both formative and summative) on Powerschool. Go to my.cherrycreekschools.org and sign in, then find the Powerschool icon. Grades are usually updated every 2 weeks.

  2. How can I contact my student's teachers?

If you have questions about how your child is doing in class, it is best to contact the teacher directly. E-mail is usually the best method and teachers’ emails can be found on Powerschool grades (click the teacher’s name in blue under the class) or on the Grandview website under “Academics” and then the specific department.

  3. How can I help my student who is struggling in their classes?

Most students struggle in a class at one point or another. At Grandview we have many in-house resources available for when students need extra help. The first step we would recommend when your student is struggling is to encourage your student to talk with their teacher. All teachers have 3 resource periods where they are available to meet with and help students.

Grandview also has free drop-in tutoring that your student can attend during their off period.

    • Math (and Science) Tutoring Center: Open M-Th, 2nd half of every period. L204.
    • GROWL (English and Social Studies Tutoring Center): Open M-F, 1st half of every period (closed A Lunch). U207.

If students need to make-up/retake a test outside of class time, they can do that in the Resource Rooms (they need to talk to their teacher ahead of time to make sure the test is in there).
    • English/Social Studies/World Language: Open daily from 7:15am-4:30pm. U206.
    • Math/Science: Open daily from 7:30am-4:40pm. L205.

  4. What is the difference between Powerschool, Schoology, and Naviance?

All of these applications can be found in one location and with the same log-in, my.cherrycreekschools.org. Students and parents both have access to all 3 applications. Powerschool is where you find your student’s grades, attendance, class schedule and you can link directly to teachers’ email addresses. Schoology is the platform that teachers use to supplement their classes. Teachers will post things such as class notes, powerpoints, assignments, readings and reminders on here. Some teachers also utilize Schoology for quizzes, tests, and submission of assignments. Schoology is a great first place to check when a student has missed class. There are grades in Schoology, but they are not all-inclusive so please refer to powerschool for an accurate final grade. Naviance is used mainly by our counselors when working with students. We utilize tools such as career and personality inventories, advanced college searches, 4-year planners. Students complete their seminar tasks each year through Naviance but can also explore careers, colleges and scholarships, create their college list and create a resume using this site. Senior year, students will use Naviance for parts of the college application process.

College

  1. How to request a transcript?

Transcript request forms MUST be submitted in the Post Grad office no later than 10 school days prior to the college/university deadline. (Be aware of Fall Break, Thanksgiving and Winter Break. We DO NOT work during that time and breaks do not count towards the 10 school days). Transcript forms can be picked up in the post grad office.

  2. How to request a letter of recommendation?

Students MUST give their teacher at least 10 school days notice before a letter of recommendation is due. Teacher letters are due two weeks prior to the transcript request deadlines. We have a 4 step process for ensuring that your letter of recommendation is completed correctly.

    • Step 1- Student completes Teacher/Counselor Conversation Starter in Naviance. Students should waive rights to see your letter of recommendation. Print off the survey once it is completed. (About Me > Survey > Surveys From Your School)

    • Step 2- Student schedules time to meet with teacher/counselor and go over your request. Print out and deliver the survey from Step 1.

    • Step 3- Student confirms with TEACHER that the letter has been written and uploaded in Naviance.

    • Step 4- Once your letter of recommendation has been uploaded to Naviance by your teacher, you can submit your transcript request form to the post grad office two working weeks prior to application deadlines. (Be aware of Thanksgiving and Winter Break. We DO NOT work during that time).

  3. How do I find scholarships?

Naviance (tile can be found on students my.cherrycreek login) is a great tool to find various scholarships. Click on Colleges > Scholarships and Money. We also recommend that you checkcollege/university websites. This will continue to be the best place to find financial aid and scholarship resources and information.

  4. How do I apply for financial aid?

Visit the FAFSA Website to begin the application process.

  5. What steps are required to play DI or DII athletics in college?

Please see the NCAA Eligibility website for more information.

Here is a Guide for the College Bound Student-Athlete to reference. Make sure to send your transcript at the end of Junior year to the NCAA eligibility center.

Career Planning/Exploration

  1. What are grade level Seminars?

Students at Grandview complete a grade-level seminar during each year of high school. These seminars are developed and implemented by the Grandview Counseling Department. Each grade-level seminar is part of the student’s ICAP (Individual Career and Academic Plan).

    • Freshman Seminar focuses on the transition from middle school to high school.
    • Sophomore Seminar focuses on career research and exploration.
    • Junior Seminar focuses on the student search for post-secondary options.
    • Senior Seminar focuses on applying to and preparing for post-graduate plans.

The grade-level seminar tasks and the ICAP assist students in planning their four years of high school and success upon graduation. Students will leave Grandview with a post-secondary and career goal in mind. While seminar is not a physical class, students are required to complete various tasks throughout the year. Seminar tasks will be introduced in the fall semester when counselors present to all students. Students will earn .125 credit and a grade of “S” (satisfactory) for each seminar, totaling .5 credit. Most tasks can be found on Naviance under the “Planner” tab, then select “Tasks”.
