Special Courses (Elective Only)
The following courses are offered at Grandview High School for ELECTIVE credit only. They help to fulfill the 5.5 elective credit required for graduation in CCSD. AVID and Student Leadership require an application and interview.
Advisory
Prerequisites: None
Grade level: 9-12
Credit: 0.25 per year
Advisory provides dedicated time within the school day for students and staff to build caring, stable, and trusting relationships that foster both social-emotional well-being and academic growth. In addition to this important connection work, Advisory also serves as a structured space where students complete essential tasks for registration, engage in personal finance lessons, and develop the skills they need to confidently navigate high school and beyond.
AVID
One Pack 101
Prerequisites: None
Grade level: 9
Credit: 0.25
All 9th grade students are registered for One Pack 101 class. One Pack 101 is a requirement for all incoming 9th grade students, and students will automatically be assigned to this class during their off period for the first 9 weeks of the school year. This course is designed to support freshmen as they transition into high school.
Peer Tutoring
Prerequisites: Successful completion of Geometry or higher
Grade level: 10-12
Credit: 0.5
Peer tutors should have a desire to help younger students with academic tutoring and organizational skills. Peer tutors begin the semester with training, so they are comfortable communicating and problem solving with the student they are tutoring. Tutoring is primarily in Algebra 1 and English 9. This is a semester commitment, and students can take this class multiple times. This is a great course for any student who enjoys helping others!
Student Assistant
Prerequisites: Teacher approved
Grade level: 9-12
Credit: 0.25 per semester
Students wishing to work as an assistant in a school office may do so in addition to their normal load of courses. Permission and approval as an office assistant begins in the Counseling Office where interested students can pick up an “Assist Permission Slip” which must be filled out by someone in the sponsoring office and then returned to the Counseling Office. The following school offices need and will use Office Assists: Activities, Athletics, Attendance, Counseling, Deans’, and the Media Center.
Student Leadership
Prerequisites: Application, interview, and acceptance to program
Grade level: 9-12
Credit: 1
Student Leadership offers Grandview students the chance to represent their school and community through active service, event planning, and student advocacy. Members of this class serve as student body officers and class representatives. Officer elections take place each spring for the following school year.
Throughout the year, students participate in leadership training, team-building experiences, district conferences, and class events. The course emphasizes practical leadership skills including communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and project management. Students apply these skills as they plan and execute major school events such as Homecoming, Prom, Dream Week, and a variety of community service initiatives.
Computer Academy
Prerequisites: Counselor approved
Grade level: 9-12
Credit: no credit
Students are enrolled in this course as an intervention for course recovery on an as needed basis by counseling.
Student Success Center
Prerequisites: Teacher and/or counselor recommendations
Grade level: 9-10
Credit: no credit
The Student Success Center Course is assigned to students if academic data suggests that extra support in the core courses is needed. Students work with teachers and/or peer tutors in the Student Success Center (SSC), Math Tutoring Center, or Grandview’s Reading, Writing, and Organizing Lab. Students may be exited from the SSC after sufficient academic data has been collected to demonstrate proficiency. This course can be taken multiple semesters.
